is there racial harmony in singapore? if yes, do u think it is based on understanding or tolerance?
.
Certainly! Singapore is a multi-racial, religious and cultural society. Schools in Singapore commemorate Racial Harmony Day on 21July every year to mark the anniversary of the 1964 racial riots. Our main races in the country comprises of Chinese, Malay and Indians.Recently,i just saw a Malay couple helping a Chinese elderly to cross the road. This shows that regardless of different race we show concerns to each other. On Racial harmony day, schools organize events such as quizzes for students to better understand and respect the different cultures. These celebrations are a reminder that promoting social cohesion and racial harmony requires constant effort from educators, parents and friends.
Although Singapore is known as a racial harmony country, there are still some minor conflicts happening around which we do not know. Examples, Chinese students bullying, despise, using vulgar language on students from different races. This is when racial tension increases and racial bonds weaken. Luckily this minor racial discrimination did not lead to major racial disputes. However, I can say that the positive relationships between races are REAL and not merely TOLERANCE! Singapore has done a very good part in providing, cultivating a positive understanding between different races.
